Even Disneyland overbooks flights

The family and I we to Disneyland today in the hopes to get another visit in before the upcoming “season of birthdays” that generally occupy every weekend from the beginning of March through May.

One of the rides we always enjoy going on is Soarin’ Over California at Disney’s California Adventure. As we always do, we made our way over to the ride and after waiting in line for a bit got in to take our seats. Becky and Brian were ahead of me and they were trying to determine which seats were theirs and then sat down, as did Kaelyn. Unfortunately, so did the group behind me leaving me without a seat. Sure, I could have gotten a little upset with the whoman who was inadvertantly sitting in what was supposed to be my seat, but the fact was the operator put too many people in our line. As a result, somebody had to get bumped. I decided to take the high road and just take a pass and let the others enjoy the ride. I simply exited the ride and waited in the exit hallway for them.

Brian was quite upset that I missed it so I asked if we could ride again. Fortunately, the operator was sensative to his error and was happy to let us all ride again after the group that was currently being seated was done. So, we were able to exit out the entrance and line up all anew. We took the added advantage to place ourselves in the sweet spot for the ride (the “cars” are in a 3×3 matrix before a parabolic screen so the center row (B2) is in the center of the screen and has the least distortion. They family got do ride it twice in succession and I got to get a decent story to blog about.

Now THIS is a cruise!

We have been making vacation plans for the family this summer and have decided to take a seven day cruise to Alaska late this June.

While watching a promotional DVD provided by our agent, we saw that Princess Cruises offers one that Becky and I have thought would be one worth investigating: the World Cruise.

That’s right, you too, can get on the boat in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and cruise for 102 days visiting 42 ports of call before you finally disembark in Southampton, England. Sure, it’s about $25k per person but when you do the math, it’s not a bad deal.

We figure it would take about 5-6 years to save up for that. If you wish to contribute funds to the effort, just let me know.

MythTV + Front Row + Mac Mini = HD happiness

I’ve been using MythTV which is the open source DVR and home theater system for Linux for years. I originally set it up because I wanted a TiVo but disliked the concept of a monthly fee to use something that I paid for. Of course, I’m a geek, so it’s reasonable for me to put together a new box, install Linux, and install and configure a fairly complex product that was, at the time, early in development.

Be careful what you say to your 6-year-old redheaded son

We were out getting a Christmas tree this afternoon and had to wait in line to pay for it and have it wrapped. My son, Brian, was not too happy about waiting, so I said, jokingly, "If you don’t want to wait, you’re more than welcome to walk home." He promptly started walking off and Becky had to go intercept him and tell him that I wasn’t serious. He didn’t know how to get home, mind you, but that wasn’t going to stop him from trying.

He’s going to be the death of me. Ugh. It’s too bad I love him so much. ;-)

A typical day

For the lack of something better to write about, here’s my normal workday:

  • 5:00 Alarm goes off
  • 5:15 Out the door
  • 6:15-6:30 Arrive at work
  • 6:30-7:00 Devotions/pray
  • 4:00-4:15 Leave work
  • 5:30-5:45 Arrive home
  • 6:15 Dinner
  • 9:00 Get kids in bed/prayers
  • 9:45 Prep for the next day
  • 10:00-10:15 Go to bed

Nothing exciting, but I figured I might as well make it part of the “official” record.

Disney’s getting more of our money

We decided to do things a little different for Christmas this year. Instead of getting presents for each other, we’ve collectively opted to use the money to purchase Disneyland annual passes for the family. It was costly, but we’re saving gift purchases, and also used proceeds from the sale of my old car. We go about three times in the next year and it’s basically paid for.

We first went this past Monday and had an enjoyable time on what turns out to be one of the lightest visitor days of the year.

And for the first of a planned series from our visits:

Disney Rules #1:
If your party needs to discuss something (e.g., “what to do next?” or “do we have everybody?”), move to the side of a walkway and do not just stop in the middle causing an unnecessary traffic jam.

Sometimes, God does make things easy

Back in September, I replaced my 1998 Toyota Corolla with a Honda Civic. I’m quite happy with it, but we never got around to doing anything about the Corolla. We were planning on donating it like we did our 1990 Nissan 240sx, but there have been other things keeping us from getting around to it. As a result, it’s just been sitting on the street.

Around Wednesday, we noticed a note on the windshield saying that if we were interested in selling the car, call. How did he know it was for sale? I mean it was only sitting in the street for the last 9 weeks and had a 1/4? of dirt all over it.

Well, I called “Mike” and spoke with him about it and he said it was for his wife after then had a baby and wanted to have a second car for her to get around town in. He came by about 30 minutes later, asked quite a few questions while he figuratively “kicked-the-tires”. I originally asked for about 60% Kelley Blue Book and he offered $500 less. I debated about countering, but he really was saving me a lot of trouble and it all ends up as “found money.”

He’ll be coming back tomorrow to complete the transaction (he needed to get the cash and I needed to get the papers).

So, how do you get a Playstation 3 without having to stand in line?

Easy, just work for the company. In all seriousness, unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ve likely heard that the Playstation 3 was released to North America (Japan was last week and Europe is next year). While I’m not any kind of über-gamer, I am a geek and a company man so, of course, I wanted to make sure I got a system.

SCEA executives were quite generous and even though units are quite constrained and significantly lower than was originally hoped or planned, they are allowing any full-time employee that wants one to order one. Not only that, they assure us that we’ll receive them before Christmas. We are also getting them for a discount. No, it isn’t much (and it would be inappropriate for me to say what it is), but I don’t have to buy a HD tv (like some CompUSA’s and Circuit City’s are requiring) nor did I have to wait in line.

As a sign that I’m more parent than gamer, the feature that I’m most looking forward to is the wireless controllers. I’m tired of tripping over and wrapping up the cords and extenders. That’ll be nie. It’s also nice that every game supports widescreen (a feature that any PS2 title could support but few do).

The Blue Man Concert blog post

We went to Blue Man Group’s How to be a Megastar 2.0 concert Saturday night. It was largely the same as their Complex Rock Tour from a few years back which wasn’t surprising as they haven’t come out with a new album since then. Everyone enjoyed it and it was the kids’ first rock concert.

My shirt was a fun addition. I originally thought that it wasn’t sensitive enough when I first turned it on when I got it at the office, but it turned out to be perfect for the sound level of the concert. I was also afraid that I would be an annoyance to those around me but with so much going on on the stage, it didn’t seem to bother anybody.

I took some snaps with my phone. Click the picture to the right to go to the gallery. Sorry for the quality.

I also had to point out a pretty interesting drum kit that Tracy Bonham‘s drummer used during her opening act performance. It’s called the GigPig and looks to be an interesting and compact kit. Part of me really would like to pick one up.

I’d write more, but I’m writing this while in a hotel room for LOPSA’s SysAdmin Days in Phoenix, AZ. I’m tired and can’t really think of much more to say (intelligently, at least).
