I was a little young when Taxi was on the air, but I did watch my fair share of episodes. This clip, I think, is the best joke of the entire series and perhaps the best joke of all time on TV.

I have seen this routine countless times and still think it ranks among the classic TV gags of all time. It resembles the “Who’s ON First” routine in that Christopher Lloyd took certain things literally as did Lou Costello. However, this routine does not wear out as quickly. Chris Lloyd may have played a drugged out hippy, but his heart was in the right place. He never suspected people may have been laughing at him for his simple, naive nature. I hope the scriptwriter who came up with this routine was amply rewarded because this is the one episode everybody remembers. It comes to mind anytime you read a traffic safety warning to observe the yellow light.
